CHAPTER MONTHLY MEETING
International Coach Week is Coming. Let’s Take Coaching Viral!
This month I had the privilege of attending the ICF Global Leadership Forum (GLF) with Sue Steinfield, ACC, SFBAC Board Secretary. The forum brought together 210 leaders from 120 chapters, representing 27,000 coaches from around the world under a powerful theme: “LeaderShift: Positive Disruptions in Leadership.” As leaders of a professional global community, we addressed the question of what our leadership approach would be: to be agents of change or stewards of the status quo?
Leda Turai Petrauskiene, MCC, the 2016 ICF Global Board Chair led off the conference by challenging our established patterns, habits, assumptions and principles and asked us to spend the next three days stretching our beliefs from “how it has always been” to “what do we want to create.” It was our task to look collaboratively at what is currently working within our chapters, and what is not – and to come up with ideas as to how WE could be more effective in serving our members and the profession.
We learned about “Designed Disruption” from Kate Canales, and “Deep Work” from Cal Newport, PhD. Suzanne Ricard-Greenway, ACC, ICF Vancouver and Jim Milner, MCC, ICF Wisconsin gave an excellent definition of leadership:
the ability to influence people and situations positively
to exercise personal impact;
to be assertive in relations with others
going from non-influential to fully intentional and
expression rather than demonstration.
Upon my return from GLF, I jumped into planning for the upcoming International Coaching Week (ICW) activities in May. Over the last few years, the SFBAC board, led by our Director of Events, Tina Ambrosini, ACC, have traditionally created several activities throughout the week, powered by our member volunteers. These events have ranged from “flash-mob” style coaching in Union Square, to coaching tables in parks and shopping malls. I think we’ve had some mixed results due, in part, to limited resources, exposure and locations.
I started to ponder: “What’s the Bigger Game? Where is the LeaderShift?”
How can we create more individual opportunities for coaching?
How can we get more coaches involved?
Is there a way to encompass the entire SF Bay Area?
How can we embody the spirit of ICW?
And then the answer became clear: We’ve been thinking too small.
What if we could create a SHIFT from a few downtown events, to exploding virally throughout the entire Bay Area? What if all 210 SFBAC coaches got involved? What kind of impact could we have upon our communities, neighborhoods and organizations? How could we accomplish something like this?
My palms started to sweat with the Challenge being proposed. This could be massive.
I’m sharing this Challenge with each of you: What would you be willing to do to promote coaching into your community, church group or organization?
Would you each be willing to contribute one hour, in 30-minute segments of free coaching to 2 people? That’s 210 hours reaching 420 people!
Would you be willing to give three hours, a half-day, in 30-minute segments, to 6 people? Do the math: That’s 630 hours reaching 1,260 individuals!!
ICW needs to be a ground-level explosion of micro-events, being organized by individuals & small groups of coaches in places & with people you know in your neighborhoods. I’m betting you each know 2 to 6 people who would LOVE to try out coaching, who NEED coaching, but are intimidated by the cost, misconceptions about what coaching is, or most commonly, addressing what is getting them stuck.
We want to hear from you.
What are your ideas? Who do you know? What are you willing to do?
Can you spare a couple of hours to create a massive impact?
Our Communications Team will create an Event Page on our SFBAC FaceBook page where you can respond and make a pledge for what you are willing to do – how many hours/people and where you plan to do the coaching. For our website, we’ll create a graph that keeps track of the number of pledged hours, people receiving coaching and where coaches plan to be.
Could we make our goal 630 hours, reaching 1,260 individuals??

April Coaches Gathering
Peer Group Business Sharing and Resource Support
As most of you know, often our ICF SFBAC meetings consist of a short networking period and then a fabulous guest speaker. At the beginning of the year, your feedback requesting more connection came through and we listened.
In 2016, one meeting per quarter is all about YOU! US! CONNECTION!
Our April gathering will be our second chapter networking evening and we are so excited to see and hear from you! We’ll start the evening with a little fun and games to see who is in attendance and get the connection ball rolling.
Once we are all warmed-up, we’ll gather in small groups for some deeper break-out activity focused on the business of coaching. This will be your opportunity to hear from each other, sharing business reflections on the past quarter as well as generating new ideas for future expansion. Our intention is to activate playful wisdom within our chapter.
Join Us For An Active Evening of Community Building!
Please bring your knowledge and expertise to the room. Together we will engage in productive and festive exchange. Plan to leave the event with new resources, potential partnering opportunities and so much more.
