Message from the Board

After a 20-year career in corporate learning and leadership development in some of the top high tech and energy companies, I took the leap into launching my independent coaching and consulting practice like many of you. I completed my coach training through Fielding Graduate University, and currently hold a PCC certification.  Although my practice is primarily leadership and OD focused, I also conduct research and work with non-profit organizations to develop leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to address issues of global marine conservation and ecological sustainability.  For fun, I teach scuba diving and love to travel. This journey from corporate to independent has been both exhilarating and humbling in many ways.  It was during this transition that Ricci asked me to join the Board of Directors.  So in this new role as Director of Programs & Events, it is my vision and intention to provide access to world-class learning experiences that help our members to:

1. Develop, practice and demonstrate Coaching Competencies: Based on feedback from membership, we have agreed to offer quarterly in-person events with a longer half-day format, which allows time for both networking and skill development. We are also looking to offer these in-person experiences in locations around the Bay, so we can share the burden of commute. In addition, we will supplement with webinars, as in the past.  Each month, at least one topic will be related to the ICF Core Competencies. If you would like to submit a proposal or suggested topic, please submit the Speaker Proposal Form to and for consideration. How are you staying fresh in your competencies?

2. Develop your Coaching Business: Unless you have hired a business development professional, you are building your own client base. We know how challenging this can be! We have sprinkled the schedule with speakers who offer practical tips, techniques and reminders for building your business.  How are you working on your business?

3. Develop your
Network: Regardless of where you are in your practice or career, it is prudent always to proactively manage and expand the professional relationships with people in your network. One of my mentors calls it “networking before you need it.”  I’m a big believer that there is more than enough good work out there for all of us. What I know is that we need each other! Whether it’s making introductions or connections, giving referrals or suggesting opportunities to collaborate, paying it forward to others in your network pays immeasurable dividends. We will be partnering with several networks and associations to provide pro bono coaching and other collaborative partnerships. How are you adding value to your network?

Develop Yourself:  As a coach, you are your product. Emergency responders and rescue divers are trained to ensure their own safety and well-being first, so that they don’t become victims too. This ensures they can perform the necessary rescue or response for their patients. Coaches are no different. Research shows that we as human beings are best equipped to show up with our full and best selves when it matters most, only when we are actively engaging our own health and well-being on every level: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.  This includes scheduling time for rest and recovery.  How are you caring for your personal well-being?

Special thanks to all of you (30 volunteers!) who signed up to provide coaching for attendees of the upcoming Watermark Conference for Women!!  Opportunities like this not only offer our members visibility, practice and coaching hours, but they also elevate the coaching profession as a whole, which benefits all of us. We will continue to announce event like these as they arise.

So many Coaches struggle with the whole concept of “to niche or not to niche?” When we look at the thriving coaches that are MOST successful, they almost always have a clear Niche and Ideal Client.  More importantly, by narrowing our focus, we can have an even deeper impact on our clients and create greater transformation in the world. This presentation will help demystify the concept of niche and address common fears and misconceptions that hold coaches back from taking the deep dive into a niched coaching practice.  


In this presentation you will learn:

  • The three aspects of a true Niche (because only a true Niche adds significant value to you and your clients)

  • The common misconceptions about Niche and what’s really true

  • The benefits to you AND your clients to choosing a niche

  • How to begin your exploration of potential niches so you choose a niche where you AND your potential client are “leaning in”

  • How to establish credibility in a newly chosen market niche

Tara Butler, CPCC, PCC is known as "The coaches' coach." She has been passionately committed to helping entrepreneurs launch and grow simple, joyous, and prosperous businesses since 2000 when she founded her own consulting and coaching practice. She has helped hundreds of clients create meaningful, sustainable, thriving businesses. As a coach herself, she witnessed many passionate coaches quit their full time job to launch their practice, only to put their dream on the shelf because they didn't know how to build a successful practice and couldn't do it on their own. In 2010, this inspired her to shift her own practice from Executive Coaching and Leadership/Team Training to helping coaches and "coach-like" entrepreneurs create simple, elegant, prosperous coaching practices in less than a year.

Tara was first introduced to coaching in 1995 after hiring a coach in her first executive role at PhotoDisc where she ran their worldwide Sales & Service organization for four years. She found that it significantly impacted her effectiveness and execution, her personal and professional relationships, and her work/life balance. It planted a seed in her that sprouted into her own personal development journey. Sales at PhotoDics grew to $150 million in her tenure before it merged with Getty Images, where Tara went on to have several executive roles (there and elsewhere) before realizing she wanted to merge her passion for business with her love of personal development and start her own consulting and coaching company. She thrives on helping others overcome obstacles and realize their highest potential. It drew her to become a Board Member of The Excellence Foundation, a non-profit organization that offers personal development programs and later became their Executive Director for over a year.

Tara is Certified Professional Co-active Coach (CPCC) through The Coaches Training Institute (CTI) and a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) through the International Coaching Federation. She is also a graduate of the CTI Coaching Program and CTI year long Leadership Program and assisted the Leadership Program twice with the founders of CTI. Tara has a B.A. from Kenyon College and a certification in Business from University of Washington. She is also a contributor to book "Fresh Start Moments" with best-selling author, Bob Danzig.

Making It Real: A Report on Our January Gathering

From the moment I walked into last month's SFBAC Making It Real gathering, I knew I'd found the community I'd been seeking. After waiting six years to begin my coaching journey, I felt like so welcomed and supported by the people in the room.

SFBAC Programs and Education Coordinator Curt Mandell and emeritus board member Sue Steinfeld led the evening. Split into groups of four or five, we were charged with writing down present-tense statements of goals we wished to realize by the end of the year (I have become an ICF certified coach" was mine). We then took turns receiving coaching one at a time, while the others coached us. We exchanged contact information to keep one another accountable.

The best part of it for me? I met my very first coachee client from this experience! My sincere gratitude to all those who attended, and I can't wait to see you at the next monthly SFBAC meeting!
